Purpose

At the end of the course the student should have acquired knowledge of the principles of Dynamic Positioning, be able to set up a dynamic positioning system and have an understanding of the practical operation of the associated equipment, including the position reference systems The student should be able to recognize and respond to the various alarms, warning and information messages. The student should also be able to relate the DP installation to the ship system, e.g. power supply, maneuvering facility, available position reference systems and nature of work. The student should also be able to relate DP operations to the existing environmental conditions of wind, sea state, current and vessel movement.

The course is part of NI DPO Training Scheme. More details about NI DPO Training Scheme you may find HERE.

Course Content

The training is based on the programme as outlined by the recommendations contained in The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines.
Training is a mix of theoretical sessions and practical exercises on Kongsberg DP stand alone simulators.

Objectives
  • Describe principles of DP
  • Describe the various elements of a DP system, including Position Reference system, sensors, power and state the requirements for redundancy including methods
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of practical operation of a DP system in various modes and use all relevant features available in exercises performed
  • Describe principle, limitations and use of position reference systems
  • Describe principle, limitations and use of sensors and ancillary equipment
  • Describe typical power and distribution arrangements in diesel electric and non-diesel electric vessels. Describe UPS systems and typical PMS system. Recognize power requirements in DP vessels
  • Describe various propulsion and thrusters system and compare them to each other
  • Describe procedures to be followed in a DP operation, including planning using vessel and field info, contingency planning, checklists, worksite approach, communication, hand over
  • Describe datum used and understand UTM coordinates
  • Describe documentation and log book requirements
  • Describe arrangements made for DP operations in specialist vessels
  • Describe hazards associated with deep and shallow water operations
Assessment

Assessment by multiple-choice tests. Pass mark 70%.

Admission Requirements

Minimum requirements for entering the DPO scheme are:
Participants must hold either a STCW Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck or a Regulation III/1 – III /2 – III/3 Engine certificate. Valid certificate must be presented on the first day of the course as proof.
Prospective DPO's, who are in the process of training for an STCW certificate can start the DP scheme and complete Induction/basic course and 30 days Familiarization only. The Simulator/Advanced course and watch-keeping training can only be completed after they hold an appropriate STCW certificate of competency. A letter from an employing company or approved college must be presented on the first day of the course as proof.
Participants NOT fulfilling the above are allowed to participate on the course, but only as a 'DP awareness' student. The certificate will state 'DP awareness' only. The course will not be considered as a part of the DP operator training scheme and the participant will not be allowed for future training as a DPO.

The Dynamic Positioning Induction Course offered by Lerus in Singapore marks the initial step for maritime professionals embarking on the path to becoming certified Dynamic Positioning Operators (DPOs) under the Nautical Institute's (NI) DPO Training and Certification Scheme. This NI-approved course is meticulously designed to provide DP operator trainees and users of DP systems with a comprehensive introduction to the principles of dynamic positioning. Utilizing Kongsberg Maritime simulators, the course delivers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical exercises, enabling participants to understand the setup and operational nuances of DP systems aboard DP-equipped vessels. Trainees will learn to recognize and respond to alarms, warnings, and informational messages on the DP system, ensuring they can effectively manage the DP installation in relation to the ship's system, including power supply, maneuvering facilities, and the environmental conditions affecting DP operations.

The course content, aligned with the recommendations of The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), covers various critical aspects of DP operations. Participants will gain insights into the DP system's components, including position reference systems, sensors, power requirements, and the redundancy methods essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of DP operations. The training also delves into the hazards associated with DP operations, particularly in deep and shallow water, and the procedures to follow during DP operations, including planning, contingency planning, and communication. By the completion of the course, trainees will have a solid foundation in dynamic positioning, preparing them for further DP training and sea time accumulation towards achieving their DP certification. This course is not only a gateway to advanced DP training but also enhances the participants' understanding of the practical operation of associated equipment, contributing significantly to their professional development in the maritime industry.

Frequently asked questions - DP Basic course

What is DP induction?

"DP Induction" is the introductory training course for Dynamic Positioning (DP). Dynamic Positioning is a specialized system used on maritime vessels, such as offshore supply ships, drilling rigs, and research vessels, allowing them to automatically maintain their position and heading without the use of anchors. This is achieved through the vessel's propellers and thrusters, which are continuously adjusted based on data from position reference sensors, gyrocompasses, and wind sensors.

The DP Induction course provides foundational knowledge and skills to individuals new to DP systems. Key components of the course typically include:

  1. Basics of Dynamic Positioning: An overview of what DP is, why it's used, and its primary applications in the maritime industry.
  2. Key Components: Introduction to the various elements that make up a DP system, including sensors, reference systems, computers, and the interface.
  3. Operational Principles: How the DP system functions to maintain a vessel's position and the basic operational techniques.
  4. Safety Protocols: Addressing potential risks and hazards associated with using DP and the importance of alarm systems.
