Anchor Handling Course
To enhance safety and give a thorough understanding of the theory and practice in anchor handling and winch operation. Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels are mainly built to handle anchors for oil rigs and platforms, tow them to location, anchor them up and, in a few cases, serve as an Emergency Rescue and Recovery Vessel (ERRV). The supply function means that they are used to transport equipment and materials to and from offshore drilling rigs. This course is developed to provide good practice especially in anchor handling operations for mobile offshore drilling units (MODU)

Theoretical lessons and practical exercises in the full mission anchor handling simulator:
- Industrial procedures training
- Planning and risk assessment of anchor handling operations
- Vessel layout
- Winch operation, functions and layout
- Winch calculation and capacity
- Correct and safe use of Shark jaws (Triplex and Karm Fork)
- Anchor systems
- Running and retrieving anchors
- Training communication and teamwork between:
- Commanding officer and winch operator
- Bridge and rig
- Bridge and deck
- Ship handling, problem solving and decision making
- Importance of experience feedback
By planning and carrying out anchor handling operations in the simulator, the participants should, upon completion of the course, ideally demonstrate a thorough knowledge of basic skills in:
- Planning and risk assessment of anchor handling operations according to procedures and safety
- Contingency planning
- As conning officer, carry out exercises in anchor handling operations
- As winch operator, carry out exercises in anchor handling operations
Admission Requirements
Participants must have competence as watch-keeping deck or engine officer, and have fulfilled at least one of the bridge duties onboard an anchor handling vessel and have experience from at least one anchor handling operation.
